A short version of my first Pemberton story. Driving to Pemberton and getting a flat tire on the way there and of course no one knew how to change it and we were in the middle of nowhere outside of a reservation. A car full of guys going to Pemberton as well pulled over and helped us put on the spare tire and then we had to drive under the speed limit for the rest of the way. Got to pemberton and had to wait in those god awful lines in our cars…while someone told us to conserve energy and push our car (that did not happen)…two hours later we got our wrist bands and were told to go down the road and park our cars in a lot and wait for buses to get us.

While we waited we drank…bad idea, because there were no bathrooms and people were running into the bushes. (NOTE: we left early in the morning so that we would not be setting up our tents in the dark). After about an hour of waiting and NO buses coming at all people started to get a little pissed off…another hour passes and everyone who was sitting in the parking lot with all of their camping gear started getting a little belligerent…probably because everyone had been drinking. The event staff were telling us all sorts of different things and the finally we decided we would just drive ourselves over to the camp site…when we tried to leave the parking lot in our car (after we had repacked everything…our driver was also a little tipsy) the guy at the gate told us that if we left with our car we wouldn’t be able to come back. so we unloaded again…dropped a bunch of stuff that was deemed unnecessary (chairs, bottles of water, warm clothes) and started to walk down the dark highway. Then a guy in a semi pulled over and asked us if we wanted a ride…i jumped in no questions asked…he was super sketchy and looking back on it now, not a smart idea, but we were fine. he then dropped us off at the wrong entrance and the guy at the gate said that we had to walk back and go to another gate. my friend started to cry (and guys can not handle it when girls cry) and then they were like ok we’ll let you in…but first you have to give us any booze that you have….WTF, as we all know, what fun is camping if you don’t have booze. So I pulled out the empty mickey of vodka that we had drank while sitting in the parking lot and said THIS IS ALL WE HAD AND WE DRANK IT WHILE WAITING FOR THE DAMN BUSES.

Then we walked to the camp site and had to set up our tents. we both had a two man tent so we were each gonna sleep in our own…mine was borrowed and i had no idea how to set it up…I thought i set it up properly but then when i got inside it fell on me. By this time it is close to 11:30 and we are exhausted…mostly because we were so enraged. We slept in the same tent for the duration of the trip because I didn’t want to have mine fall and suffocate me in the middle of the night…so we put our bags in one tent and us in the other….but then on the last night someone (I am assuming someone extremely drunk or high) broke into the tent and stole our bags. THe next morning we found all of our stuff spread around the whole camp site…awesome.

Camping was my main summer activity as a teenager and into my early twenties so I’ve got a lot of stories.

Three that jump to mind immediately:

A drunken decision to go swimming in a lake close to a campsite turned into 8 people fighting off hypothermia the rest of the night by huddling all of us in a tent meant for 2.

Another was an unfortunate decision to risk camping in October, a few drinks later and no one was able to drive and the temperature unexpectedly dropped to sub minus 15! One girl brought her dog and as early as 10pm that night the water had frozen in it’s dish…it was that cold! We ended up building a huge bonfire and all stayed within 3 or 4 feet of it til morning…why didn’t we just sober and go home where it was nice and warm? That would mean we’d have to stop drinking. :)

Another great one was one summer night we were all sitting around the fire trying to freak each other out with scary scenarios and this lead to yet another unfortunate decision to go play in the woods…we all wandered down winding paths and deserted roads with torches (and booze)…but then the torches burned out eventually and suddenly none
of us were certain on how to get back. We ended up wandering for about 3 or 4 hours until we found our campsite again…meanwhile every girl with us had had at least one nervous breakdown each…and all the guys too…we just hid it better. :)

If you haven’t gone camping in a long time, you should. And if you’ve never been, you should make an effort to. Gathering in the wilderness, or the semi-wilderness with a group of friends is extremely fulfilling. Add a couple drinks, and the social element kicks into high gear with conversation, song and roaring fires. Drunk Camping is a site that wishes to promote this sort of thing with a tongue in cheek title.

What are the benefits of camping? Well firstly, you get to spend some quality time with either those you love or some new acquaintances. You can prove you’re an able human being by cooking your own food, and you can entertain yourself with something other than a television or video games machine. Yeah, you can take your cell phones or mobiles along, but don’t load them with time wasting crap.

Few people I’ve met are that well versed in the areas of nature around them. To me, that’s pretty sad. The aim here is to help you learn a little more about your part of the world.
